A new rescue for injured birds of prey is now open in Los Angeles County.

Regional Park Superintendent Noemi Navar says the raptor rescue at the San Dimas Canyon Nature Center fills the need left when Wild Wings of California closed .

“With the support of Fish and Wildlife and [County Supervisor] Katherine Barger giving our first year of donation, we were able to go ahead and get this up and running,” Navar told KNX News’ Karen Adams.

There are 70 owls and hawks being nursed back to health so they can be released back into the wild. Navar said many of the injuries they see are man-made.

“We get a lot of collisions, like a car, or we can get a window strike where they run into windows,” she said. “We also unfortunately get a lot of gunshot wounds – we get BB guns and pellet guns, barbed wire, fishing line, poison.”

The raptor rescue hopes to rehabilitate 250 animals a year.
