    Los Angeles' September cover.

"There's no denying the striking beauty of our September cover subject," says Los Angeles President and publisher Chris Gialanella of Annie Clark, aka St. Vincent. "Sassy, sophisticated and always fashion-forward, she models this fall’s new looks ahead of the red carpets she’ll undoubtedly strut as awards season approaches."

According to Los Angeles creative director Ada Guerin, the cover shoot was a collaboration between herself, stylist Avigail Collins and photographer Lenka Ulrichova. "St. Vincent has a Hedy Lamarr glamour about her but she also has a kooky cool that's very unique," shares Guerin. "It was about exaggerated gestures. Dramatic and animated — think Marcel Marcel meets David Bowie with a little Dada-ism sprinkled on top!”

In the fickle world of fashion, where trends are as fleeting as a catchy chorus, few stylists have managed to carve out a distinctive niche as successfully as Collins. Known for her edgy yet sophisticated tastes, she's become a go-to for musicians chasing that perfect sartorial statement, including St. Vincent. A native of the U.K. who now calls Los Angeles her home, she first forged her relationship with the artist on an NME cover shoot in 2014 and has continued to work with her ever since.

“[I have] no idea who recommended me but would love to send them flowers as the match made years of creativity and friendship,” Collins says, with a smile.

On the 2014 “St. Vincent” tour, Collins’ keen eye and bold fashion choices captivated audiences and fashionistas alike. On St. Vincent’s seventh studio album, All Born Screaming , Collins’ mission was to translate the project’s themes — “life and death and transformation,” per the artist’s description — into a visual form. And for our fall fashion issue, Collins brought that sensibility to the looks she chose from brands including Loewe, Tory Burch, Max Mara and Prada.

Lenka Ulrichova, a revered Czech photographer living in L.A., was the perfect person to capture Los Angeles ' vision for the St. Vincent shoot. Her stylishly feminine but focused work has appeared in scores of magazines around the world, with fashion, beauty and celebrity imagery as her signature. Architectural images and fine art landscapes are also part of her repertoire, and with St. Vincent, she was able to meld all of her strengths.

The former model's work often explores themes of identity and beauty, and this spread was no exception as she captured Clark's avante-garde chic for the cover of Los Angeles. “Sometimes the photo gods shine their light upon you,” Ulrichova says of the shoot, “and all the elements line up perfectly. It was a dream come true.”
