1 dead, 3 injured in crash in Los Banos, CHP says

LOS BANOS, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A man is dead and three people are injured after a two-vehicle crash in Los Banos, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP says on July 4, the Merced Communication Center received a call of a crash on Canal School Road on Highway 33 with medical personnel responding. Officers from the CHP Los Banos Area responded to the scene and investigated the crash.

According to CHP, a preliminary investigation indicates a 22-year-old man was driving a 2017 Nissan southbound Canal School Road north of Highway 33 at an undetermined speed. Another man was driving a 2002 Chevrolet northbound on Canal School Road, north of Highway 33 at an undetermined speed.

For an unknown reason, the driver of the Nissan allowed the car to travel across the solid yellow lines and traveled into the northbound lane of Canal School Road directly in front of the Chevrolet.

CHP says the vehicles collided head-on in the northbound lane, and the Chevrolet came to a rest on its roof on the east shoulder of Canal School Road, facing west. The Nissan came to rest on its wheels on the west shoulder of Canal School Road, facing south.

According to CHP, the driver of the Nissan was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries. All passengers were transported to local hospitals with major to minor injuries.

CHP says drugs or alcohol do not seem to be a factor in the crash.
