Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kentuckiana Meals Program Impacts Families
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kentuckiana (RMHCK) provides a comfortable, home-like setting, free of charge, for families from across the country while their children receive medical care in Louisville. Often, families who must travel to Louisville for their child’s medical care don’t know how long they will be away from home. That uncertainty can bring more emotional and financial stress to an already traumatic time. That’s where Ronald McDonald House steps in. Located just a few blocks from Louisville’s downtown hospitals, RMHCK is a home in every sense of the word; a 56-guestroom haven built by love, through generosity, with a foundation centered on family. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, RMHCK provides a home away from home to families, including a warm meal every night and brunch on the weekends. “Since 1984, we have provided the home and support that allows families to stay together while they focus on the health of their child,” RMHCK CEO Hal Hedley said. “On average, our families stay with us for a total of eight nights, and we want to support them every step of the way.” Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kentuckiana believes nothing else should matter when a family is focused on their child’s recovery—not where they can afford to stay, whether they can be together, or where they will get their next meal. RMHCK’s Meals from the Heart program, led by Chef James Garst, ensures RMHCK families have a warm, nutritional meal every night. The chef-led experience allows volunteers to work with Chef James, who has 14 years of experience in the kitchen, to prepare and serve a meal for the families staying at RMHCK. “It’s an honor to care for and help others care for our guest families,” Garst said. “We help to provide the nutrition the families need to keep their focus on their child, who is receiving medical care.” Whether you’re looking for a team-building activity for colleagues, or a fun way to give back with friends and family, Meals from the Heart is a great way for groups of up to 8 people to be part of RMHCK’s mission, while learning from a professional chef. In the chef-led experience, volunteers make a $300 donation to RMHCK so Chef James can plan a menu, buy the ingredients, and lead the group in preparing a delicious meal in RMHCK’s commercial kitchen. The group then serves the meal to the families, packages the leftovers, and cleans up. In 2022, RMHCK and volunteer groups served 471 meals to 930 families. “Our Meals from the Heart program is a great opportunity for friends, family, companies, civic, and church groups to get involved with RMHCK and help take care of families when they need it most,” Hedley said. “Meals are critical for our families. They provide energy for families to get through the next day.” Tim Stevens, an RMHCK volunteer, felt the impact of Ronald McDonald House when his newborn son TJ was in the hospital two and a half hours away from his home. TJ was born with a genetic condition that required a liver transplant. “During the four and a half months we spent in the hospital, I could always count on the Ronald McDonald House,” Stevens said. “It was a place of healing. When going through one of the most challenging times in my life, a smile and kind words with a warm meal meant so much to me.” Stevens now serves a meal at RMHCK with his family and friends once a month and on Thanksgiving. “A warm dinner is one less thing families have to worry about in their day, and it’s one thing they can count on,” Stevens said. “When you participate in Meals from the Heart, you are providing more than food. You provide families with a sense of normalcy and community. It’s food for the soul.” There are several ways to get involved and volunteer at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kentuckiana. From getting rooms ready to cooking and serving meals to washing laundry, volunteers are the heart and soul of the Louisville Ronald McDonald House.
