Will it rain in Louisville during Fourth of July fireworks? Timing of forecast could shift

Louisville drivers may need their windshield wipers at times this week. Scattered rains could occasionally bring heavy downpours across the region starting Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service said Monday.

The mid-week showers and thunderstorms may be similar to the ones seen in Louisville last week, which were briefly strong, but not widespread, NWS Louisville meteorologist Kyle Wilkins said Monday. Those traveling through Indiana, as far south as Seymour, could see the most rain through the Fourth of July weekend.

Storms may be "hit-or-miss" across the Louisville metro area this week, but no widespread severe storms are expected, Wilkins said.

When rain is not falling in Louisville, warm weather will return, with temperatures approaching the 90s and humidity levels reaching the 70s, enough moisture to make time outdoors "miserable," Wilkins said.

"I think further south down towards Bowling Green, southern Kentucky, will likely see more sunshine (Wednesday through Friday)," Wilkins said. "So it will heat up the further south you are due to more sunshine."

The forecast could change right before Independence Day celebrations, but here is a look at what to expect during the holiday weekend.

When to expect rain in Louisville Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

Leaving the Louisville area Wednesday afternoon? You could be in for the first round of rain showers and thunderstorms. There is a 20% chance of storms in Louisville starting after 2 p.m., according to a National Weather Service forecast issued Monday.

Showers and thunderstorms will gradually weaken and skies could be mostly clear Thursday morning and afternoon. The main threat for storms Thursday may arrive "later in the day," Wilkins said.

Rain and thunderstorms are "likely" before 8 p.m. Thursday and storms are likely to resume after 2 a.m. Friday, the National Weather Service's forecast stated.

Though Louisville could be dry in time for Thursday night fireworks shows, Wilkins said the timing of storms could shift right before planned activities are set to take place.

"We're far enough out from those couple of hours where I wouldn't lock down (the forecast) just yet. There's too much uncertainty on the details this far out," Wilkins said.
