Mayor Craig Greenberg and Metro Public Works Director Jennifer Caummisar-Kern

announced the road ahead for a new Department of Transportation (DOT) at a press conference Tuesday, July 16.

The department will consolidate all aspects of transportation — think:
planning, design, engineering, operations, and maintenance. Right now, Louisville’s Department of Public Works (DPW) and Office of Planning split these duties.

Earlier this year, the Metro Government assembled a DOT consulting team, which outlined three recommendations for the new department:
    • Reorganize: Transportation-related functions will be consolidated under one organizational umbrella. This includes creating four full-time positions funded by the 2024-2025 Metro budget .
    • Realign: The new department will have defined core values, a vision statement, a mission statement, and specific goals meant to reflect community priorities.
    • Rebrand: DPW will become the Department of Transportation and Services to underscore its role in transportation.
The new department is set to launch in January 2025.
