Good morning and happy Thursday. (You can read today's eNewspaper here .)

According to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service in Louisville, we should expect patchy fog for the morning commute, along with a fair chance of showers or a thunderstorm during the early afternoon hours. We're expected to be partly sunny otherwise with a high around 86.

Here are this morning's top stories so far:

Dogs at risk: More than 600 dogs in Louisville's animal control system could face euthanasia in 2024, according to new data provided by Metro Animal Services.

Officials say overcrowding, combined with high employee turnover and little action from Louisville Metro Council, have created a problem where shelters are being forced to take in more problems than they can handle and the situation is likely to get worse. Because Louisville doesn't require pet population controls like mircochipping or spaying and neutering, the number of stray dogs roaming the city's streets have exploded, which leads to problems at its shelters, workers say.

Some council members say they're open to introducing new rules surrounding pets in the city, but also say they're less inclined to do so if it means placing new burdens on taxpayers.

    In other news:

    • Politics: The possibility of Gov. Andy Beshear being tapped as a vice presidential candidate is still plausible, but Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman says she's prepared to step into the role if required.
    • Development: A section of 310 @ NuLu, the Ballard Street apartment complex that partially burned down in February, will be rebuilt , according to new plans filed with the city.
    • Business: Humana has announced it will partner with Walmart to open a new series of senior health care centers in their supercenter locations in four states.
