Louisville's own electric company?: Louisville officials are reportedly considering options to form a new municipal electric utility, separate from LG&E and KU’s local monopoly, as Kentucky moves forward with plans to achieve carbon-free power.

The hypothetical utility would help power Louisville Metro Government and many other local power loads, but the potential costs associated with such a project could make the idea impossible. Louisville’s clean-energy goals are more ambitious than those of LG&E and KU, which intend to generate power with fossil fuels for decades to come, but buying clean energy from those utilities appears to be a more viable option than potentially adding thousands to the city's operational costs for far longer.

Read more about the potential plan through our story from environmental reporter Connor Giffin.
