If you are regularly drive along Mellwood Avenue and Brownsboro Road in Clifton, you will want to keep your eye out for temporary lane closures for at least a month.

Road work already underway will impact a portion of Mellwood Avenue from Frankfort Avenue to Brownsboro Road, and the portion of Bronwsboro Road between Mellwood Avenue and Chenoweth Lane, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Crews are redesigning these routes as two-way roads, which experts believe will be safer than the current one-way configuration.

Road work is scheduled Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The project is expected to be finished by "the end of August," a transportation cabinet spokesperson said.

What is changing on Brownsboro Road and Mellwood Avenue?

Mellwood Avenue, which has three one-way travel lanes carrying eastbound traffic between Frankfort Avenue and Brownsboro Road, will be converted to a two-way road with one curbside strip for on-street parking, the transportation cabinet said in a statement.

Brownsboro Road, from Mellwood Avenue to Chenoweth Lane, would be reconfigured to have two travel lanes heading opposite directions and a center two-way left-turn lane. The section of Bronwsboro Road between Haldeman Avenue and Ewing avenues already has this design, the transportation cabinet said.

Plans also include the installation of left-turn lanes at signalized intersections, newly marked shoulders, a striped median on Bronwsboro Road between Jarvis Lane and Mockingbird Valley Road, and a right turn lane at Mockingbird Valley Road and Brownsboro Road.

One other section of road along Brownsboro Road is also undergoing a makeover.

"At (Brownsboro Road) and Country Lane, the current five-lane section will see no changes eastbound, however the leftmost lane westbound will become a left turn only lane to Country Lane, with a single westbound lane continuing and a dedicated right turn lane to Country Lane," KYTC said in a statement.

Why is traffic flow being changed on these roads?

The transportation cabinet said the roads need to be "rightsized" for safety purposes. Studies have found that two-way roads are safer than one-ways because vehicles generally travel at a slower rate on them, The Courier Journal previously reported.

Work on other two-way projects continue

Project work with a two-way redesign continues at Logan and Shelby streets. In a construction update posted on its website Monday, the transportation cabinet stated crews were preparing for asphalt resurfacing and a two way conversion between Goss Avenue and East Gray Street.

Construction on the project was set to be complete before the end of summer 2024, The Courier Journal previously reported.
