    Starting 5: St. Xavier High School alum honored, Louisville Cardinals in Olympics, more

    St. Xavier High School graduate Chris Burke was recently inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame .

    Burke, part of St. X's Class of 1998, played baseball at the University of Tennessee , earning All-American honors each of his three seasons. As a junior, he led the Volunteers to the College World Series and was a National Player of the Year finalist.

    Burke still holds program career records at Tennessee for hits (314), runs scored (224) and total bases (498).

    The 10th overall pick in the 2001 MLB Draft, Burke played for the Houston Astros, Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres during his pro career.

    One of his career highlights came while playing for the Astros in Game 4 of the 2005 National League Division Series against the Braves when he hit a walk-off home run in the 18th inning.

    The opening ceremony for the 2024 Paris Olympics was held Friday and featured more than 10,000 athletes from over 200 nations.

    University of Louisville thrower Jayden Ulrich will be competing in the discus for Team USA. She is the first athlete from the U of L track and field program to represent the United States in the Olympics.

    Around the state: 5-star Jasper Johnson lists Louisville basketball, Kentucky among finalists

    Kentucky native Jasper Johnson , who starred at Woodford County before transferring to Link Academy in Missouri, has Louisville and Kentucky listed among his finalists. The 6-foot-4 guard, who will play his final high school season in Atlanta with Overtime Elite, also listed North Carolina, Arkansas and Alabama among his top five.

    According to the 247sports composite rankings , the five-star recruit is the country's No. 2 shooting guard and No. 10 player in the Class of 2025.

    Whitefield Academy volleyball star Taylor Wathen verbally committed to South Carolina on Friday. Wathen is an outside hitter in the Class of 2026.

    • Racing Louisville FC will face Orlando Pride on the road Thursday at 7 p.m. in a Summer Cup game.
    • Louisville City FC will host Eintracht Frankfurt at 8 p.m. Tuesday. The club will then play at New Mexico United at 9 p.m. Saturday.
    • The Louisville Bats will begin their six-game road series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. The series continues with games Wednesday (1:05 p.m.), Thursday (6:35 p.m.), Friday (6:35 p.m.), Saturday (1:05 p.m.) and Sunday (1:05 p.m.).
