Tornadoes, heavy downpours and thunderstorms are all possible in Louisville Monday night as a strong line of storms is expected to move into the area.

Louisville is under a slight risk for severe weather Monday, with the strongest line of storms expected after daylight, National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Neudorff said. An earlier round of showers and thunderstorms may sweep through the Louisville metro around lunchtime, but those storms likely will not be as strong as the overnight wave. Those storm are expected to enter the region between 8 p.m. and midnight Tuesday, with localized flooding and damaging winds being the primary threats. Spin-up tornadoes also cannot be ruled out.

The slight risk for severe weather includes Louisville and southern Indiana, and extends to the Interstate 75 corridor in central Kentucky, Neudorff said. Some parts of the metro area could receive over an inch of rain Monday.

If the wave of Monday afternoon storms bring soaking rains, the severity of the evening storms may weaken.

"Clouds are going to move into our area as we go throughout the morning," Neudorff said. "Those high clouds could minimize how warm we get, and by minimizing how warm we get, that could lower the available energy, which we call instability."

Later in the week, Neudorff said there could be clusters of storms arriving on what would otherwise be a hot and humid day. These storms could be isolated and bring heavy rain at times, but they may not be severe, Neudorff said.
