Crozet Phenom Heading to Olympics
Western Albemarle High School rising senior Thomas Heilman stepped into the spotlight at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Indianapolis in June, where most of the best swimmers in the world competed for precious few spots on the team for the Olympic Games in Paris in July. In races where a couple hundredths of a second make all the difference and only the top two finishers make the trip, Heilman qualified for the U.S. team in not one but two events.
Virginia lacrosse alumni dominate PLL: Shellenberger leads in goals, Dickson in points
Virginia Cavaliers stand out in the Premier Lacrosse League with the second-highest number of rostered players, totaling 16 athletes. Notably, Connor Shellenberger and Xander Dickson from the New York Atlas squad have been excelling, with Dickson leading the league in goals and Shellenberger ranking second in points. Shellenberger is a strong contender for Rookie of the Year, although competition with Brennan O'Neil remains fierce. Additional former Virginia players, like Dox Aitken and Payton Cormier, are also making their mark in the league.
Crozet Trails Crew Awarded Earth Flag by Sierra Club
The Crozet Trails Crew (CTC) was awarded an Earth Flag by the Piedmont Group of the Sierra Club June 22 in recognition of their work building and maintaining a trail system in and around Crozet. “We think the work the Crozet Trails Crew is doing is so positive and powerful that it deserves more recognition,” the Sierra Club explained in its press release. CTC president Terri Miyamoto affirmed “we are excited and honored to receive this recognition.” The award was presented by Sierra Club leaders Donna Shaunesey and Scott Ziemer at the point on Lickinghole Creek where a pedestrian bridge is planned that will unite the eastern and western sections of Crozet’s trail system.
Shenandoah Park Murders Solved, Questions Remain
When Kathryn Miles came to Crozet last year to talk about her most recent book, Trailed, she explained how she came to write it, what she learned, and why the double homicide of two young women skilled in wilderness survival had yet to be solved, partly because of the recalcitrance of the authorities involved in the case over a span of almost 30 years.
Heat Advisory Issued for July 5 from Noon to 8 PM
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The National Weather Service has us under a July 5 heat advisory from noon to 8pm. Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur. The weather service advises drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
Green Olive Tree Is Moving
August 1 is fast approaching. That’s the date when we must be completely moved out of our current location, where we have been since 2010. We will be moving into space at Music Today. We realize this is not ideal, since it means you will have to park on the north side of 240 and cross the street to come into the store. There are several handicapped parking spaces close to the entrance. We are grateful that we can continue to be a part of the Crozet community.

Saving lives through blood donation: The annual summer broadcasters for blood is Monday July 8th
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Blood donation is always critically important to supply our local hospitals for patients dealing with regular treatments or experiencing trauma. According to the American Red Cross, summer poses significant challenges for blood donation collection. Vacations and other seasonal activities result in a notable decline in donations, even though the need for blood remains high. Regular donors, including high school and university students who contribute up to 30% of the blood supply, are often unavailable during this time. “Our stable donors sometimes are away from their normal routines. They’re on vacation and most important to the schools, high schools and universities. They’re out, so we no longer have access to that very valuable component.”
