Branching out to help clean up
Some members of the West Whitlock State Recreation Area staff helped with cleanup in Pierre on Monday. The Oahe Downstream area was hit hard during a storm over the weekend, that knocked down trees and branches, and also did damage to area businesses. The members of Gettysburg’s river staff from the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks chipped in to help at the park near Pierre, while others stayed back to tend to the park at the bay west of Gettysburg. Upgrade of tennis courts in Pierre’s Griffin Park completed thanks to partial funding from legacy initiative in honor of US Open champion Coco Gauff
Griffin Park in Pierre has eight newly surfaced tennis courts and a professional tennis star to thank for a large chunk of it. Late last year, the City of Pierre received a grant from the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to resurface the courts in Griffin Park. The grant is part of the US Open Legacy Initiative, which was created in celebration of Coco Gauff’s 2023 US Open women’s singles title. The Pierre City Commission received confirmation the new surfaces are in and the project is complete.

Harrold Man Arrested In Pierre Saturday Afternoon Following Scuffle With Police
PIERRE, (KCCR) — A Harrold man was arrested by Pierre police over the weekend following a confrontation with an officer. Pierre Police Department Captain Dusty Pelle says officers were first called Saturday around 12:15 pm to the area near Robert Street and Dakota Avenue for a possible intoxicated individual laying face down in the grass. An arriving officer noticed the subject, identified by police as 29 year-old Chance Redwater, moving but having difficulty walking. An officer asked Redwater to stop while trying to speak with him and he refused. That’s when the officer attempted to reach for Redwater’s arm. Redwater then tensed up and threatened to hit the officer. Redwater attempted to pull away from the officer, but the officer was able to assist Redwater to the ground to be taken into custody. Redwater continued to threaten the officer after he was in custody. Redwater was transported to the Hughes County Jail on charges including Threatening a Law Enforcement Officer; Resisting Arrest; Obstructing an Officer and Simple Assault Against a Law Enforcement Officer.

Annual Missouri Cleanup Completed
PIERRE, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Missouri River Cleanup around Pierre and Fort Pierre clears 2+ tons of stuff out of the water The annual Missouri River/Lake Sharpe Cleanup event at Pierre and Fort Pierre took 2.21 tons of debris out of the two bodies of water. Paul Lepisto with the Izaak Walton League says over 90 volunteers in water and land-based crews, cleaned up areas from the Oahe Dam to east of the Farm Island Recreation Area.
Post 8 Travels to Sioux Falls to Face West
Another big doubleheader is on tap for Pierre Post 8 as the Eights will travel to Sioux Falls area for the first of three times this week, taking on Sioux Falls West today. The Eights are 6-13 in South Dakota games and are closing in on clinching a spot in the playoffs which will be in a week and a half. Pierre potentially needs just one more win to guarantee a spot in the playoffs this season. However, with still six games remaining, plenty of wins can bring a high quality playoff spot and a better chance at making the state tournament. The Eights face West today, a team above them in the standings sitting at 9-13 in South Dakota games and in ninth place. Pierre faces both West and Brandon Valley in the first two doubleheaders this week, the two teams right above them in the standings as the Eights sit in 11th place.
