Swann Memorial Fountain turns 100
Philadelphia's Swann Memorial Fountain in Logan Square turns 100 years old this month. Why it matters: The popular fountain is a must-see for tourists and becomes an unofficial (and illegal) swimming hole on sweltering summer days.State of play: The massive fountain on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway was first turned on in 1924.Architect Wilson Eyre, Jr. and sculptor Alexander Stirling Calder designed and built the fountain.Fun facts: The trio of bronze Native American figures lounging at the center of the fountain represent the city's three main waterways surrounded by water bronze frogs and turtles, per the Association for Public Art.The statue of a young girl posing on her side against a swan represents Wissahickon Creek. The woman holding the neck of a swan over her head is the Schuylkill River. The man, a member of the Lenni Lenape or Delaware tribe, with a fish on his head is the Delaware River.By the numbers: The central geyser shoots water 50 feet in the air.🔎 Between the lines: While containing swan sculptures, the fountain gets its namesake from Wilson Cary Swann, founder of the Philadelphia Fountain Society.
