Jordan Lawrence rewarded for modeling good character

A Central Elementary School student has received the Lowndes County Children’s Policy Council’s last Character in Action (CIA) award for the 2023-2024 school year.

Jordan Lawrence, a fifth grader at Central, was nominated for the award designed to recognize positive behaviors in those who model good character. His teacher, Keyra Thomas, submitted Lawrence for award consideration because of his determination to improve academically and in good behavior.

“As the year progressed, I have seen Jordan actively seek to improve himself, not only academically, but also with his behavior,” Thomas said. “He has made a huge turn around in not only his response to redirection, but also correction with his work.”

In addition to modeling academic excellence, Thomas said Lawrence has a servant’s heart and helps other students and is well liked by his peers..

“He volunteers to help in and outside of the classroom,” Thomas said. “Whenever he sees younger children, he is quick to offer them help, a hug, a handshake or a high five. He takes joy in making others laugh and values the friendships he’s made with others.”

Lowndes County District Judge Adrian Johnson chairs the council and explained why the awards are important for the community.

“We started the Character in Action program in order to recognize those children’s outstanding things in their home, their school or their community,” Johnson said. “Unfortunately, in the court system, we have to deal with children that are in trouble that are going through difficulties. And we don’t do a good enough job of recognizing those children that are doing outstanding things. We had an opportunity a few years ago to start this program, just as our way of congratulating the children that often go unnoticed, children that are doing really, really outstanding things.”

According to Thomas, Lawrence embodies the type of student behavior CIA awards aim to inspire.

“I nominated him because of the growth I’ve seen in him and how he treats others,” Thomas said. “He has gone from putting himself down to taking pride in his work and even encouraging others that they can do it. I believe good character is not just about having it but doing the work to improve it.”
