LOWVILLE, N.Y. (WWTI) – One of the harder-hit areas in the flooding from Hurricane Beryl was Lowville Academy and Central School.

School  Superintendent Rebecca Dunckel released a statement on the school’s Facebook page and their ParentSquare about the damage to the school from Wednesday’s flooding.

Severe flooding in Lowville brings significant damage to homes and roads

“In the late hours of July 10, 2024, our beloved school, like many of our community members’ homes, experienced unexpected flooding due to the heavy rains.” Dunckel said in a statement. She thanked the community for their support including students and staff and said it “is a testament to our collective resilience and spirit.”

In the face of this adversity, the response from our community has been nothing short of extraordinary. Community members, including our faculty and staff, have offered to come together to assist in the cleanup and recovery efforts. I am incredibly moved by the outpouring of support we’ve received. This experience has truly shown us the strength and unity of our community. Our school is more than just a building; it’s a family. And together, we will rebuild stronger than ever.

The district said flooding affected several areas of the school, including classrooms, gymnasium, cafeterias, and outdoor facilities.

Programs like summer school and Super Stage will return next week because they received limited damage.

District officials will update the public on the progress of repairs. The statement ended with ” together, we will rise above this challenge and emerge stronger, united by our shared commitment to the future of our children and the well-being of our community.”
