Penn State Reports Whooping Cough Cases at University Park
With pertussis, or whooping cough, on the rise nationally and in Pennsylvania, Penn State reported on Monday that it has had several cases of the respiratory illness since the spring at University Park. Five confirmed and six probable cases have been identified on campus since mid-March, according to a news release. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 7,251 whooping cough cases had been reported nationwide as of June 29, more than triple the same time last year. Pa. man arrested for speeding on motorcycle with dog on lap and drugs in sock
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A man from Pennsylvania was arrested after authorities said he was speeding on his motorcycle with a dog on his lap and drugs in his sock. Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release that 28-year-old Devin Yake was charged in connection with the incident in Lancaster County last week. State police said Yake was pulled over on Willow Valley Drive in West Lampeter Township around 12:30 a.m. on July 23 for multiple traffic violations, including speeding and careless driving. State police said Yake had a pit bull on his lap while driving and methamphetamine in his sock, plus marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Yake, who had active warrants for his arrest, was taken into custody and placed in the Lancaster County Prison. State police said he also appeared to be under the influence. The pit bull was taken to Yake's address and "released to a responsible party," state police said in the news release. Yake is facing a list of charges, including DUI and drug possession.

A Delaware man was convicted of kidnapping and carjacking during a violent crime spree spanning two states.A jury found 24-year-old Tonnaire McNair-Matthews guilty on Tuesday.Prosecutors say that McNair-Matthews -- along with David Hinson, Michael Caldwell, and Mahkiya Powell -- committed thefts by rear-ending drivers to get them out of their cars.It happened both in Delaware and in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania back in 2023.During one of the carjackings, McNair-Matthews kidnapped and raped a victim before getting away.He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
