Jayton's Sean Stanaland starts on fire

Stanaland picked up where he left off in San Antonio. The sophomore scored 20 points in his last game at the Alamodome, a 49-44 overtime loss to Graford in the 2023 state championship.

Stanaland scored Jayton's first 13 points, including a 9-0 run to start the game. He reached 20 by halftime, shooting 8 of 13 and 1 of 2 from beyond the arc. Stanaland's aggressiveness attacking the rim also resulted in five free-throw attempts, including a three-point play in the first quarter. He made 3 of 5 tries from the charity stripe.

    Jaybirds swarm Fayetteville on defense

The length of 6-foot-4 Griff Reel, 6-2 Colt Gentry and 5-11 Ayden Salazar disrupted the Lions offense early and often.

Fayetteville missed its first seven shots and didn't score until the 2:50 mark of the first quarter. The Lions fought back to a 26-19 halftime deficit, but Jayton slammed the door with more defense.

The Jaybirds held Fayetteville without a field goal the final 6 minutes, 40 seconds of the third quarter. The Lions managed four points on 1 of 9 shooting in the frame, falling behind 36-23.

Fayetteville scored seven points in the second half.

    Jayton in familiar position

Of the Jaybirds' four state-tournament appearances, which have all occurred since 2019, the team has reached the final three times.

That included Jayton's first berth, when the team beat Nazareth 38-37 in the semifinals on a buzzer-beater. The Jaybirds fell to Slidell 49-36 in the championship. The next season Slidell beat Jayton in the semifinals before the rest of the tournament was ultimately canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
