Lubbock Fire Rescue, along with other Lubbock County fire departments, were responding to a large brush fire sparked by a transformer in sweltering conditions late Wednesday afternoon in east Lubbock.

According to LRF, the fire was contained as of 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night.

LFR was first called out the fire just at 3:30 p.m. after receiving numerous 911 calls of a failed near the intersection of East 50th Street and East Loop 289 being on fire.

Several crews were dispatched, but due to dry ground conditions, wind and difficulty accessing the fire, additional crews were requested from LFR, the county and the Texas A&M Forest Service.

According to LFR, crews will be assigned to the fire to monitor it throughout the night into late Thursday morning. The public might see and smell smoke in the area; however, there is no threat to public safety at this time.

LFR advises the public with sensitive respiratory conditions to take precautions, such as staying indoors and keeping windows and doors closed.
