Lubbock’s 4th on Broadway celebration returns with new parade route, exciting lineup

LUBBOCK, Texas — Lubbock’s 4th on Broadway celebration returns for its 34th year with a new parade route, and Smash Mouth headlining the evening concert.

The annual Fourth of July celebration is set to begin at 9:45 a.m. with the Bolton Oil Parade. The parade begins at Broadway and Avenue J and ends at MLK, Jr. Blvd. The parade will be broadcasted on KLBK.

Katie Sandifer who is the executive director of Broadway Festivals Inc said the only difference there will be is the missing on the one who started the event back in 1991, Don Caldwell.

Sandifer said, “It’ll just look a little different on our end of stuff because, you know, there’s not two people running it. That’s just me this year.”

In which Caldwell’s daughter, Cami Caldwell remembers why she enjoys this type of event and why it could mean a lot of memories for others as well.

Caldwell said, “”every single evening concert, there would be a point where he would put his arm around me. We’d be standing on the stage and we’d look out over the crowd of all of these Lubbock people who he loved so much. And he would say, Look at those people. This is why we do what we do It’s for those people. And I’m so thankful that he instilled the value of community and music in me. And I hope to honor him with the continuation of his legacy through Fourth on Broadway this year, the 34th year.”

Gandy’s Kids Area at Mackenzie Park will be open from 10:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. with inflatables, water slides, face painting, a mechanical bull and more.

The following is a schedule of events for the 4th on Broadway:

• 9:45 a.m., Bolton Oil Parade
• 10:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. Reliant’s Picnic in the Park featuring:
  • 10:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. The Gandy’s Kids Area hosts free kids’ activities, including inflatables, games and more.
  • 11 a.m. – 4:15 p.m. BMW of Lubbock Daytime Stages : Four major outdoor stages feature the best of West Texas music, including the BMW of Lubbock Red, White and Blue stages as well as the West Texas Roots Stage.
  • 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Cabela’s Youth Fishing Tournament hosts FREE fishing for ages 18 and under, along with prizes in several categories. Pre-registration is encouraged.
  • 5 p.m. River Smith’s Catfish and Cobbler Eating Contests for kids and adults; pre-registration is encouraged.

• 7-10 p.m. The Gorilla Law Firm Evening Concert features headliner Smash Mouth. Also appearing:
• Tribute to Selena featuring Gabriella Flores
• Blackwater Draw
• Rockin’ ‘80s Tribute featuring the Caldwell Collective
• 10 p.m. The United Supermarkets Fireworks Extravaganza choreographed live to classic and contemporary patriotic music.

Parking

Paid parking is available at the South Plains Fairgrounds and on the corner of Broadway and Canyon Lake Drive with a free shuttle service. 4th on Broadway offers free parking off Canyon Lake Drive between Broadway and 19th Street.
