LUBBOCK, Texas — Christopher Acevedo II, 19, was indicted for Manslaughter on Tuesday in connection with a shooting that left Rudy Romo Ramirez dead in the 2500 block of Cornell Street on July 1.
Officers were initially called to the area at 12:44 a.m. for shots fired. Romo Ramirez was found lying on the floor from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased by EMS at the scene.
EverythingLubbock.com previously reported security video showed about 10 young individuals arriving at the Cornell Street address and running off when a gunshot was heard. According to court records, it did not appear the group was fighting. Court records said the group was heard saying Romo Ramirez had been shot. According to court records, the group was then seen running or getting into different vehicles before police arrived. Court documents said some left with what appeared to be firearms.
Witnesses at the scene told police they had been friends with each other since early childhood. Acevedo was “recklessly playing around” with Romo Ramirez by pointing a firearm at him and applying pressure to the trigger of the loaded weapon, court documents stated. Witnesses said Acevedo and Romo Ramirez were laughing and “playing around” by pointing firearms at one another. Court records said this behavior between the two was not unusual.
A witness tried to stop them at one point. Acevedo continued to point his firearm at Romo Ramirez and shortly after shot and killed him.
According to court records, a witness said Acevedo was shocked. The witness said after Acevedo shot Romo Ramirez, he screamed, “What did I do?”
A witness told police the shooting was an accident, and added the two are friends who “love each other.”
Court records said Acevedo admitted to Romo Ramirez’s family that he had shot him. No guns were found inside the Cornell Street residence after the shooting, court documents said.
Acevedo was also charged with unlawful carrying a weapon in an unrelated case. As of Tuesday, Acevedo remained at the Lubbock County Detention Center on bonds totaling $306,000.
