Lubbock Fire Rescue offers cool tips for summer power outages

LUBBOCK, Texas – Power outages can happen anytime, and they are certainly not rare in the summertime. Lubbock Fire Rescue’s Derek Delgado told EverythingLubbock.com what measures people should take if they encounter an outage.

According to LFR, there are multiple ways to stay cool during a summertime power outage. To start, there are cooling centers like libraries where one can briefly stay. Inside these libraries, there are chargers to charge electronics, so you can still contact anyone you need.

Next, taking care of your body is essential to body regulation. Staying hydrated is key to beating the heat. Additionally, one can use portable fans and generators to keep them cool and keep their devices alive.

According to Delgado, the best thing to do during a power outage is to have a plan, know where your generator is and keep your documents safe.

LFR stressed to those using a generator to ensure it’s not being misused. LFR elaborated that the generator should be safe from your home. Generators produce carbon monoxide, which is an “invisible killer,” according to Delgado. If inhaled, it can cause major bodily harm, so be careful when handling these devices.

You should keep tech devices such as chargers and cell phones on hand during a power outage. “This will help you stay connected with others,” said Delgado. He also stressed the importance of having cash.
