Lubbock’s first baby box to be blessed this week

LUBBOCK, Texas — Lubbock’s first baby box will be blessed on Thursday, July 18. The box also marks Texas’ second Safe Haven Baby Box and the 247th location in the U.S.

The box will be located at Lubbock Fire Station 9.

“The newest addition represents a significant step forward in our mission to provide a safe and anonymous alternative to surrendering an infant,” said the Safe Haven Baby Box Inc. in a press release.

This comes on the heels of the Lubbock City Council voting in favor of a resolution that would effectively bring baby boxes to West Texas.

“The Safe Haven Baby Box in Lubbock would not have been possible without the local
advocates who worked tirelessly to bring this resource to their community,” the press release continued.

The Lubbock Fire Station thanked Turning Point Community Church for funding the box, the Lubbock City Council for approving the installation of the box and the Lubbock Professional Fire Fighters Association for the collaboration and beginning this process from the ground up.

Seventeen of fifty states have a Baby Box presence within their state and since 2017, 50 infants have been safely and legally surrendered in a Baby Box.
