    Hello A-J readers!

We had a handful of business updates and announcements during the past week, along with the sweet return of the review team for National Ice Cream Day on Sunday.

An update on Shaq's Big Chicken location developed this week. The restaurant at 7411 Milwaukee Ave. plans to open within the next two weeks, pending any unexpected changes. On opening day, which has not been identified, the first 34 customers will receive gift cards for free chicken for a year. The cards will be loaded with $10 every week for the year.

"Knowing the excitement in Lubbock for something new, we're expecting big numbers of people to come out there," said Coby Jones, franchisee. "We're excited to get the best chicken sandwiches in Texas out to the local community."

The Brass Tap, 11108 Slide Road, Suite 600, announced a tentative opening date of Sept. 6, 2024. Savage Tavern also announced an upcoming sports bar, The Soggy Dog. This new bar will include a "mysterious" speakeasy, and is hiring now.

Covenant Park also announced the two newest editions to the upcoming development - Summer Moon and IHOP. The businesses are expected to open in late 2024.

On Tuesday, Annie Rice, Mateo Rosiles and I made the best decision of the week - to go ice-cream hopping. We checked out four locally-owned ice cream places and tried each locations' fan favorites. With National Ice Cream Day being Sunday, July 21, it was the perfect time to bring back the review team. Make sure you read the Three Spoons review to find out which place had the best ice cream out of 13 tastings.

And, if you read the review, you will understand why this week's best bite is the Mangonada Loca from Mi Linda Michoacana, 2331 34th St. Trust me, you will not be disappointed if you get it for National Ice Cream day. Or any day really, it is just that good.

Rounding out the week was the feature on Alcove Farms, a chicken farm owned by Betenbough. We met many chickens (all named Henrietta), several Great Pyrenees (and they were indeed great) and learned how the farm operates.

Going into next week, I look forward to sharing the news about an upcoming Brazilian restaurant, two new studios and any other business news that is bound to pop up between now and then.

As always, thank you for reading and supporting the A-J.
