    Meet the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal's 2024 baseball Super Team

    NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

    Gerrit Boschma, So., first baseman, Shallowater

    Boschma was a big boost to region-semifinalist Shallowater in his debut.

    He hit .526 with a .599 OBP and .845 slugging percentage. Boschman notched 61 hits, 16 doubles, six triples, three home runs, 44 RBI and 42 runs.

    COACH OF THE YEAR

    Gary McLendon, Morton

    McLendon continued Morton's athletic success with a deep playoff run.

    Morton reached the Region I-1A final, falling to eventual state-champion Ira. After a second-place finish in district, Morton rattled off three playoff wins, including a dramatic three-game series win over Nazareth in the region semifinals.

    FIRST TEAM

    Nano Mendoza, Sr., pitcher/third baseman, Frenship

    The District 2-6A MVP and a Texas High School Coaches Association Super Elite Team selection, Mendoza was 5-2 with a 1.70 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 39 innings. He batted .429 with a .473 OBP, 11 doubles, seven home runs, 41 RBI and 22 runs. He struck out three times.

    Jake Qualia, Jr., pitcher/third baseman, Lubbock-Cooper

    Qualia, the District 4-5A co-pitcher of the year, went 8-2 with a 0.77 ERA and 82 strikeouts over 73 innings. He issued seven walks. Qualia also hit .292 with a .383 OBP and .425 slugging percentage. He tallied 11 doubles, one triple, one home run, 29 RBI, 15 runs and three stolen bases.

    Brooks Roberson, Sr., pitcher, Frenship

    Roberson earned District 2-6A pitcher of the year after going 7-3 with a 1.85 ERA over 56⅔ innings. He totaled 82 strikeouts and 28 walks.

    Santana Martinez, Sr., catcher, Estacado

    Martinez hit .434 with a .558 OBP and .627 slugging percentage. He tallied 10 doubles, 15 RBI, 17 runs and 24 walks. He struck out eight times in 114 plate appearances. Martinez's fielding percentage was .980 with 181 put outs, 18 assists and 23 caught stealing.

    Ryder Watkins, Jr., first baseman, New Home

    Watkins hit .435 with a .525 OBP and .609 slugging percentage. He notched 50 hits, 11 doubles, three triples, one home run, 42 RBI and 36 runs.

    Gavin McPherson, So., second baseman, Lubbock-Cooper Liberty

    McPherson batted .479 with a .602 OBP, four doubles, seven triples, 17 RBI, 42 runs and 34 stolen bases.

    Logan Addison, Sr., third baseman/pitcher, New Home

    Addison, a Texas Tech signee, hit .485 with a .612 OBP and .758 slugging percentage. He totaled 48 hits, eight doubles, five triples, three home runs, 35 RBI and 55 runs. On the mound he went 6-1 with a 2.28 ERA and 80 strikeouts. He allowed eight hits over 40 innings and threw four no-hitters.

    Derek Cantu, Sr., shortstop, Idalou

    Cantu hit .506 with a .904 slugging percentage, 42 hits, eight doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 38 RBI and 35 runs. He struck out six times. Cantu's fielding percentage was .853 with 24 put outs.

    Josh Lopez, Sr., outfielder, Seminole

    Lopez batted .337 with 14 doubles, five home runs, 25 RBI and 27 runs. He posted a .980 fielding percentage.

    Seth Mayberry, So., outfielder, Plainview

    Mayberry hit .405 with a .516 OBP and .622 slugging percentage. He totaled 10 doubles, three triples, 20 RBI, 28 runs and 12 stolen bases. Mayberry struck out 10 times in 74 at-bats.

    Izayah Ward, Sr., outfielder, Shallowater

    Ward batted .491 with a .606 OBP and .726 slugging percentage. He finished with 52 hits, 13 doubles, three triples, two home runs, 37 RBI, 37 runs and 25 walks. Ward had six stolen bases on six attempts.

    Carter Bovkoon, Sr., utility, Monterey

    Bovkoon hit .400 with a .465 OBP and .539 slugging percentage. He totaled 46 hits, eight doubles, four triples, 23 RBI and 28 runs. Bovkoon also had a .984 fielding percentage with 153 put outs, 28 assists and 13 double plays.

    SPARKS OFF THE BENCH

    Tate Hendley, Sr., pitcher, Idalou

    Hendley went 8-1 with a 1.82 ERA and 86 strikeouts over 50 innings. He hit .325 with four doubles, 22 RBI, 31 runs and 13 stolen bases. Hendley's fielding percentage was .921 with 72 put outs.

    Mason Marmolejo, Jr., shortstop/pitcher, Ropes

    Marmolejo, the district offensive MVP and all-state selection, hit .462 with a .545 OBP and .654 slugging percentage. He notched 10 doubles, two triples, two home runs, 23 RBI and 45 stolen bases. Marmolejo posted a 2.66 ERA with 50 strikeouts over 21 innings.

    Jared Owens, Sr., pitcher/first baseman, Coronado

    Owens, the co-district pitcher of the year, went 4-1 with a 2.44 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 46 innings. He posted a .214 batting average against and .970 fielding percentage. Owens hit .370 with a .500 OBP, two doubles, 17 RBI, 17 runs and five stolen bases.

    Obed Reyes, Jr., pitcher/third baseman, Seminole

    Reyes went 8-3 with a 0.54 ERA and 99 strikeouts. He hit .353 with 30 hits, nine doubles, two triples, 20 RBI and 24 runs.

    Ryder Starkey, So., shortstop, New Home

    Starkey batted .441 with a .479 OBP and .835 slugging percentage. He notched 56 hits, 19 doubles, eight triples, five home runs, 45 RBI and 52 runs.

    Cameron Swanson, Sr., pitcher, Shallowater

    Swanson was 13-2 with a 1.36 ERA and 101 strikeouts over 72⅓ innings. He posted an .899 WHIP and .116 batting average against.

    SECOND TEAM

    Brazos Beck, Sr., pitcher/second baseman, New Home

    Beck went 8-0 with a 1.33 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 42 innings. He also hit .379 with a .506 OBP, four doubles, one triple, 14 RBI and 36 runs.

    Rowin Donaldson, Jr., pitcher/shortstop, Seminole

    Donaldson went 6-2 with a 1.49 ERA and 93 strikeouts. He also posted five saves and a .908 fielding percentage. Donaldson batted .379 with 44 hits, 11 doubles, six triples, one home run, 16 RBI and 34 runs.

    Bode Franklin, Jr., pitcher/outfielder, Ropes

    Franklin went 8-4 with a 1.62 ERA and 101 strikeouts over 60⅓ innings. He hit .464 with a .516 OBP, .500 slugging percentage, one double, 16 RBI and four stolen bases.

    Cade Lyon, Jr., catcher/pitcher, Morton

    Lyon batted .517 with two home runs and 25 RBI, recording a hit in 20 of 24 games. He also went 7-4 on the mound with a .488 ERA and .972 fielding percentage.

    Miles Riley, Sr., first baseman, Denver City

    Riley was the District 3-3A MVP, hitting .389 with a .522 OBP. He totaled 36 hits.

    Holden Phillips, Jr., second baseman, Frenship

    Phillips batted .304 with a .371 OBP and 31 hits, including six doubles, two triples and two home runs. The first-team all-district selection tallied 22 RBI and 26 runs with two strikeouts.

    Kade Franklin, So., third baseman/pitcher, Ropes

    Franklin hit .476 with a .560 OBP and .607 slugging percentage. He tallied 40 hits, six doubles, one triple, one home run, 34 RBI and four stolen bases. Franklin had a .907 fielding percentage and went 6-2 with a 2.87 ERA and 42 strikeouts and 18 walks over 39 innings.

    Brayden Gurney, Jr., shortstop/pitcher, Shallowater

    Gurney batted .354 with a .473 OBP and .434 slugging percentage. He totaled 35 hits, six doubles, one triple, 27 RBI and 30 runs. Gurney also went 10-2 with a 1.34 ERA, 87 strikeouts and 25 walks in 73 innings. He posted a .183 batting average against.

    Marcus Brown, Sr., outfielder, Estacado

    Brown hit .405 with a .505 OBP and .544 slugging percentage. He notched 11 doubles, one triple, 25 RBI and 16 runs. Brown's fielding percentage was .921 with 32 put outs and three assists.

    Daniel Gonzales, Jr., outfielder, Denver City

    Gonzales had a .391 batting average and .417 OBP. He was a first-team all-district pick.

    Landon Hutcheson, Sr., outfielder/pitcher, Frenship

    Hutcheson hit .323 with a .493 OBP, 32 hits, five doubles, three triples, three home runs, 20 RBI and 40 runs. He also went 4-1 with a 1.97 ERA, 26 strikeouts and eight walks over 28⅓ innings.

    Easton Stewart, Sr., utility, Snyder

    Stewart, who split time as pitcher, shortstop, first baseman and third baseman, was the District 5-4A MVP and a THSBCA all-state selection. He went 5-3 with a 2.31 ERA, 42 strikeouts and a .953 fielding percentage. Stewart hit .402 with a .475 OBP and .500 slugging percentage. He tallied 41 hits, eight doubles, one triple, 25 RBI, 22 runs and seven stolen bases.

    SPARKS OFF THE BENCH

    Chip Green, Jr., third baseman, Littlefield

    Green hit .412 with a .488 OBP. He totaled nine doubles, 21 RBI and 10 stolen bases.

    Jack Henley, Sr., third baseman, Idalou

    Henley batted .387 with a .527 slugging percentage, 36 hits, six doubles, two triples, one home run, 27 RBI and 31 runs. He struck out eight times. Henley posted an .844 fielding percentage with 20 put outs.

    Jackson Jolly, Sr., pitcher/catcher, Monterey

    Jolly went 6-5 with a 2.58 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 69⅔ innings. He hit .363 with a .416 OBP, .516 slugging percentage, 45 hits, nine doubles, five triples, 21 RBI and 23 runs. Jolly's fielding percentage was .925 with 129 put outs, 31 assists and two double plays.

    Gilbert Martinez, Sr., shortstop/pitcher, Estacado

    Martinez batted .402 with a .486 OBP and .586 slugging percentage. He notched 12 doubles, two triples, 30 RBI and 27 runs. Martinez went 2-5 with a 3.59 ERA and 68 strikeouts over 54⅔ innings. He also had an .890 fielding percentage with 38 put outs and 43 assists.

    Jaxon Rodriguez, Sr., pitcher, Sundown

    Rodriguez posted a 3.30 ERA with three wins and two saves in 63⅔ innings. He recorded 96 strikeouts and a 1.45 WHIP. Rodriguez hit .434 with a .567 OBP, .803 slugging percentage, 12 doubles, five triples, two home runs and 30 RBI.

    Graham Stanford, Jr., utility, New Home

    Stanford, who played catcher and outfielder, hit .408 with a .605 OBP and .539 slugging percentage. He tallied six doubles, two triples, 12 RBI, 32 runs and 29 walks. Stanford also threw 19⅔ innings, going 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA and 33 strikeouts.
