LUBBOCK, Texas — Bernard’s convenience store on Highway 87 remains empty as the overpass project near Highway 87 and FM 41 is still unfinished.

Herrlinda Thrash and her husband bought the store before the construction began just five years ago.

Today, business at the store remains slow as the construction company contracted to complete the project filed for bankruptcy and the site has been untouched for over a year.

In recent months, the store has been closed more than usual because of personal responsibilities the couple has been required to be away for.

Thrash and her husband are the only employees at the store as they can no longer have employees due to the need to cut costs. When personal responsibilities require the two to be away, they are forced to close the store.

“Currently we are not closed,” Thrash said.

She noted that the store appears closed with the tall weeds in front of it due to the Texas Department of Transportation not maintaining the area.

When construction started, customers did not know how to get to Brenard’s because roads were blocked off. The couple budgeted for the expected loss of business it would have due to construction, but not for it to have no end in sight.

“We are dying on the vine,” Thrash said.

Thrash filed a lawsuit with TxDOT and is seeking financial compensation. They are in the litigation process, Thrash said.

The store has no plans to close, but Thrash said it could close temporarily if nothing is resolved.

Thrash emphasized the positivity and grace the store has received from its customers and vendors has been greatly appreciated by her and her husband.

    Bernard’s is usually open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and sometimes from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
