One of the deepest position groups in Lubbock-area high school football is running back. Here's a look at the top five in the South Plains, listed in alphabetical order.
Xavier Jimenez, Sr., Lockney
Jimenez led the South Plains with 2,000 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns on 292 carries. He was the 2023 small-school offensive player of the year.
Rolando Martinez, Sr., Abernathy
Martinez exploded after a permanent move to running back. He ran 64 times for 561 yards and 14 TDs in the final three games of the regular season to help Abernathy secure the No. 2 seed.
Bobby Ross, Sr., Estacado
Our 2023 big-school offensive player of the year, Ross averaged 10.5 yards per carry. The Division I recruit ran for 1,565 yards and 22 TDs on 149 attempts.
Josue Sigala, So., Muleshoe
Sigala burst onto the scene with 1,127 yards and 22 TDs on 93 carries, an average of 12.1 yards per attempt.
Andrew Velasco, Sr., Denver City
The speedy Velasco rushed 192 times for 1,728 yards and 12 TDs.
