Sylvania Township intersection to close entirely for one week

Start planning now to avoid the intersection of Sylvania Avenue and Holland-Sylvania Road next week if that’s a part of Sylvania Township you regularly visit.

The Lucas County Engineer’s Office plans to shut the intersection down entirely for seven days to resurface it, including subsurface pavement repairs and drainage work, starting July 22.

County Engineer Mike Pniewski said rehabbing the intersection was originally planned to be done with traffic maintained, but when bids for a contract were advertised late last year, it came in substantially over budget.

Officials reviewed the project, he said, and determined that the biggest avoidable cost was breaking the work into phases and managing traffic during the work.

So to save Lucas County motorists and taxpayers an unspecified, but apparently significant, amount of money, the work was redesigned to be done in a single one-week dollop and rolled into a $2,017,573 contract the county awarded this spring to Ebony Construction that also includes building a section of multi-use path along Airport Highway in Springfield Township and a median divider on McCord Road just south of Central Avenue.

With I-475 paralleling Sylvania Avenue to the south and Holland-Sylvania hemmed in both by U.S. 23 to the west and Camp Miakonda and the Sylvania Country Club to the east, this is not an easy intersection to avoid for those traveling in that area.

My recommendation for drivers headed to points north of the intersection from farther away, such as Maumee or most of Toledo, is to use I-475 and U.S. 23 to the Monroe Street interchange in Sylvania and then travel south on Harroun Road to reach the stretch of Holland-Sylvania immediately north of the closed intersection.

Through traffic that uses Holland-Sylvania past Sylvania would similarly do well to use U.S. 23 instead, although a posted detour will offer McCord between Brint Road and Central as an alternative.

Central, meanwhile, will be the posted detour for Sylvania, via Corey and McCord roads. Drivers who normally use the Talmadge interchange on I-475 as part of a Sylvania Avenue routing to or from Sylvania Township will do best to use the Central interchange instead.

For local access, the southerly leg of Holland-Sylvania will be reachable only via Central, and the sections of Sylvania on either side will similarly be reachable only via McCord to the west or Corey to the east.

A resurfacing project will close Talmadge Road to through traffic between Alexis and Laskey roads for 14 days, starting Wednesday.

While local access will be maintained, through traffic will be detoured east to Secor Road. Flanders Road is a closer potential alternative to the west.

As usual, plan your trip to avoid unnecessary backtracking.

Nighttime pavement repairs will reduce varying sections of I-75 and I-475 to a single lane at night this week. Work hours for all of this work will be 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.

On Monday night, northbound I-475 will be affected between Hull Prairie Road and the Maumee River in Perrysburg and Perrysburg Township and near the Central Avenue interchange in Sylvania Township.

On Tuesday night, southbound I-75 will be reduced to one lane just south of Suder Avenue, approaching the Alexis Road exit, to I-280. At I-280, all traffic will be directed onto the exit ramp, but I-75 traffic can then use the Stickney/Lagrange collector lane to return to I-75.

On Wednesday night, northbound I-75 will be reduced to one lane between the Jeep Parkway interchange and a point north of I-280. The northbound I-75 exit to I-280 and entrance from Stickney/Lagrange will be closed.

    • I-75: Resurfacing closes mainline lanes at night between State Rt. 199 and Glenwood Road. Lane closings also possible for bridge work at Lime City Road, which is closed. Parapet wall repairs may still close a southbound lane at the DiSalle Bridge. See introductory section for short-term lane closings this week for pavement repairs elsewhere.

    • I-75: Left lane may be closed near Hancock County Road 99 north of Findlay for a bridge project.

    • I-75 (Mich.): Lane closings, Exit 5 (Erie) to north of Exit 9 (LaSalle), for roadway reconstruction. Southbound traffic is crossed over to the northbound side. The southbound exit ramps at Exit 9 (South Otter Creek) and Exit 6 (Luna Pier) are closed; use LaPlaisance Road (Exit 11) or Erie Road (Exit 5) instead.

    • Ohio Turnpike: Exit 34 (State Rt. 108/Wauseon) is closed for reconstruction; use Exit 25 or 39 instead.

    • I-280: Traffic shifts to the right between State Rts. 2 and 51 for median reconstruction. Two lanes remain open southbound but northbound traffic is reduced to one lane through the zone until mid-August.

    • I-475/U.S. 23: No shoulders and traffic is shifted between U.S. 24 (Exit 4) and Angola Road for reconstruction and widening. Both ramps connecting southbound I-475/U.S. 23 with westbound U.S. 24 are closed until mid-August. Detour through other interchange ramps to get from southbound I-475 to westbound U.S. 24. Use Ford Street and Dussel Drive to reach southbound I-475 from westbound U.S. 24. Monclova Road will be closed at I-475 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. July 22, 23, and 24 for overhead bridge work; detour via Briarfield/Technology/Jerome.

    • U.S. 20A/State Rt. 2: Closed at Main Street (westerly junction of State Rt. 64) in Swanton for sewer construction until mid-September. Detour via U.S. 20 between State Rts. 295 and 109. Route 64 detours via Routes 20A/2, 295, and 20.

    • U.S. 24 (Fearing): Lanes closed between Airport Highway and Hill for overpass replacement. Consider Byrne Road as an alternative route between Airport and Hill.

    • State Rt. 2: Lane closings west of State Rt. 163 in Ottawa County for slope repair.

    • State Rt. 25 (Anthony Wayne Trail): Inbound right lane closed between Copland and Glendale for multi-use path construction.

    • State Rt. 25/U.S. 24 (Anthony Wayne Trail): Lane closings between Monclova Road and Detroit Avenue for finish work related to a recent repair, repaving, bike path, and landscaping project.

    • State Rt. 65 (Craig Memorial Bridge): Closed indefinitely because of vehicular damage to safety gates. Use the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge or I-280 Veterans’ Glass City Skyway instead.

    • State Rt. 65 (River): Closed to through traffic between State Rts. 64 and 235 for culvert replacements until mid-August. A posted detour uses U.S. 24, on the opposite side of the Maumee River, between Route 64 and State Rt. 295.

    • State Rt. 120 (Central): Eastbound right lane closed this week, Reynolds to Exmoor, for brush and tree cutting.

    • State Rt. 295: Lane restrictions Monday through Wednesday at Archbold-Whitehouse Road for brush removal.

    • Broadway Street: All lanes except one inbound lane are closed to through traffic between Newbury Street and Western Avenue for street reconstruction. Western (State Rt. 2) remains closed at Broadway and several other cross streets also are closed nearby.

    • Glendale Avenue: Culvert work requires lane closings between Fallbrook Road and Cherrylawn Drive until mid-October.

    • U.S. 23/30: Left lane closed in both directions at the State Rts. 53/67 interchange on Upper Sandusky’s north side for pavement replacement.

    • U.S. 6: Flag zones between U.S. 23 and State Rt. 53 in Sandusky County for resurfacing.

    • State Rt. 795: Lanes closed between I-75 and State Rt. 51 for repaving, which mostly occurs at night (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.). A new ramp schedule calls for the eastbound ramps at East Broadway to close Monday for 10 days, followed by the westbound ramps.

    • Hill Avenue/Centennial Road: Intersection closed for roundabout construction until late July. Use Angola as an alternate for Hill and King as an alternate for Centennial.

    • Salisbury/Holloway roads: Intersection closed for roundabout construction until late August. Use Maumee-Western (U.S. 20A) as an alternate for Salisbury and either Albon or Manley as alternates for Holloway.

    • Summit Street (Mich.): The I-75 Exit 2 Connector, already reduced to one lane each way between I-75 and Suder Avenue, will be further restricted starting Wednesday to a single lane governed by traffic signals for ongoing bridge work.
