Global technology outage affecting some Lucas County services
Friday’s global technology outage is having ripple effects in Lucas County; transit services, health-care organizations, and social services are among the businesses affected. The international outage was connected to CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm used by a multitude of global industries. After CrowdStrike issued a software update, machines running the Microsoft Windows operating system began to crash, explained Ahmad Javaid, associate professor in the department of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Toledo. According to Mr. Javaid, while there have been similar outages from a technical standpoint, this is the largest of its kind. Any local businesses using CrowdStrike services would have been affected, he said. Lucas County Job and Family Services and Lucas County Child Support Enforcement Agency services may be unavailable Friday because of the global outage, said Sarah Elms, the communications director for the Board of Lucas County Commissioners.
Lucas County Children Services running out of money, adding levy to November ballot
TOLEDO, Ohio — Lucas County voters in November will see a 1.5-mill levy on the ballot for Lucas County Children Services. LCCS Executive Director Randy Muth said the agency is in dire need of money, so if this new levy doesn't pass, there will be financial cuts. Since the agency is predicted to be operating in the red by the end of 2025, Muth said it's necessary to ask taxpayers to help in the short term.
Coroner's office seeking family of recently deceased man
The Lucas County Coroner’s Office is asking for the public’s help in finding relatives of a West Toledo man who died July 8. Thomas Brown, 74, was found dead in his home. Anyone who can connect officials with his relatives is asked to call the coroner’s office at 419-213-3900.
Toledo man indicted for fatal crash while allegedly driving drunk
TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) - A Lucas County grand jury indicted a Toledo man for allegedly hitting and killing another man while driving drunk. The grand jury indicted Steven Duckett, 63, of Toledo, on two counts of Aggravated Vehicular Homicide and two counts of Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence on July 16. He’s charged in a crash that killed 56-year-old David Heath, of Toledo, in 2023.

Man found guilty in death of girlfriend's 3-year-old son
After hearing witnesses’ final testimony and closing arguments on the fourth day of trial on Friday, a jury found Michael Kitto guilty of aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, and child endangerment for the Oct. 7, 2022, death of 3-year-old Declan Hill. The verdict was read by Judge Linda Jennings as multiple people in the gallery of her courtroom broke down in tears. On Oct. 6, 2022, Kitto was watching Declan, his girlfriend’s son, while she was at work. Kitto subsequently called 911 and reported the child had run into a door and fallen to the floor. First responders arrived to find Declan unconscious, unresponsive, not breathing, and without a pulse. He was declared dead a day later. Kitto was arrested in Michigan after the Lucas County Coroner’s Office deemed the child’s death a homicide caused by blunt force head and neck trauma

Man indicted for fatal 2023 crash at West Toledo intersection
A Toledo man has been charged with two counts each of aggravated vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs for another man’s death last year in a collision at Laskey and Bennett roads. Steven Dukett, 63, who lives along the 600 block of Custer Drive a short distance from the crash scene, is scheduled for arraignment in Lucas County Common Pleas Court on July 31 before Judge Michael Goulding. Mr. Dukett is charged for the death of David Heath, 56, of the 1600 block of Champlain Street, who police said was the other driver in a collision of two pickup trucks reported at 6:18 p.m. on Sept. 1, 2023. Mr. Heath died six days later in Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center. According to a witness statement included in the Toledo Police Department’s crash report, Mr. Dukett’s pickup was northbound on Bennett and, while running a red light at Laskey, collided “full force” with Mr. Heath’s westbound vehicle. After the collision, the witness said, the northbound vehicle continued “speeding and swerving down Bennett Road” and its driver appeared to be “highly intoxicated.”
