Notable former Luce Co. Sheriff Kevin Erickson dies after long illness
The Luce County Sheriff’s Office said retired Sheriff Kevin Erickson passed away in the early Thursday from a long illness. His career with the office started in 1978. Shortly after becoming a deputy, Erickson became sheriff at 22 years old, making him the youngest sheriff in Michigan history at the time. Sheriff Erickson retired in 2017 after 37 years, also making him the longest-serving sheriff in the state of Michigan. After retiring as sheriff, Erickson became a county commissioner and later the Luce County emergency management coordinator. He will also be remembered as an instructor at Northern Michigan University Police Academy.
Luce Order of Eastern Star has dissolved
In an unfortunate trend, many of Newberry’s longstanding service organizations and groups have disbanded in recent years. And the trend continues: After 117 years, Luce Chapter 364 Order of Eastern Star was faced with the same shortage of members and lack of participation. They surrendered their charter on June 17, 2024.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Upper Peninsula receive Small Agency of the Year Award
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Upper Peninsula recently received national recognition by winning the Small Agency of the Year Award. The U.P. branch of BBBS won the award at their National Conference in Dallas, Texas, where they also won the 2023 Growth Award, received by serving more youth within a calendar year than in previous years. They recently took on more youth from counties where other locations closed, such as Dickinson and Delta Counties. Overall, BBBSMQT serves Marquette, Alger, Luce, Delta, Dickinson, and Schoolcraft Counties.
Feeding America mobile food pantry to visit Luce County Thursday
NEWBERRY, Mich. (WLUC) - Feeding America West Michigan’s mobile food pantry will visit the city of Newberry Thursday afternoon. The pantry is located at the GCCP Dunlap Center at 6545 M-123. Food distribution begins at 2:00 p.m. Eastern time. Those who cannot attend the event can have a person pick up food for them, but space is limited. That person will need to provide the name, address, and household size of any family they are picking up for.
