Dip in for salsa canning workshop

Luverne residents have the opportunity to dip into new cooking skills, through a salsa workshop aimed to instruct home chefs how to prepare their own homemade salsa, from the ground to the jar.

The workshop is an event organized by the Crenshaw County Extension Office, and will allow attendees to make and can their own salsa. At the event, attendees will also learn more about the canning process, how to properly can foods and even grow their own tomatoes.

“I think that canning has been a lost art for some time, but I do think that since Covid. a lot of people are getting back into it,” said Bridget Brannon, a regional Extension agent specializing in food safety and quality.

The event will be led by Brannon and Emily Wismer, the food safety quality agents for the Coffee County Extension Office.

During the event, there will be hands-on demonstrations by Brannon of the salsa making process and how to use a water bath canning method. Additionally, there will be opportunities for attendees to taste the salsa they made.

“I think that canning is a good way to preserve that freshness throughout the winter months,” Brannon said. “When you can something opposed to freezing it, it tastes just as fresh as if you ate it from the garden.”

While the salsa is processing, Brannon will give a presentation on how homeowners can successfully grow tomatoes in their backyards.

“I believe it’s important because it can be therapeutic,” he said. “It’s a fun way to spend time in your backyard and actually be productive and spend some time outside. I think that may give you a lot of pride when you are able to successfully grow your own food and then be able to make it into something you enjoy like salsa.”

At the end of the event, attendees will be able to take home their own small jar of salsa.

The workshop will be held at the Tom Harbin Farm Center on 816 Airport Road in Luverne. The event is scheduled for June 6, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
