Williamsport, Pa. — The Pennsylvania Treasury reports that it is currently holding on to $4 billion in unclaimed property such as abandoned contents of safe deposit boxes, inactive savings accounts, forgotten stocks, and uncashed checks.

During a recent event hosted by Sen. Gene Yaw (R-23), Rep. Jamie Flick (R-83), and Rep. Joe Hamm (R-84), over $54,000 in unclaimed property was returned to residents of Lycoming County and the surrounding area.

“Teaming up with legislators to return unclaimed property is always fantastic, but this event was especially great,” Pa. Treasurer Garrity said. “Sen. Yaw, Rep. Flick, and Rep. Hamm were great partners in the effort to return this money. We’re all still being hurt by inflation, especially with the price of groceries, so returning this money will make a big difference. My team and I are working to return more than $4.5 billion in unclaimed property, and I encourage everyone to check our website to see if any money is available for them to claim. It takes less than a minute to search!”

“I was thrilled to see so many of Saturday’s attendees reconnected with money and tangible assets that rightfully belong to them,” Sen. Yaw said. “This was a fantastic event and I’m grateful to Rep. Flick, Rep. Hamm, and Treasurer Garrity for their collaboration.”

Residents and business owners stopped by Sen. Yaw’s district office in Williamsport on July 20, where they were helped in their search for unclaimed property by the legislators and the Treasury’s outreach team.

“I’m thrilled our residents will be receiving some financial relief due to our joint event on Saturday,” Rep. Flick added. “I am proud to have partnered with Treasurer Garrity, Sen. Yaw and Rep. Hamm to make this possible and deliver quick results. This is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together.”

The $54,169.77 worth of unclaimed property identified at the event is in the process of being returned to its rightful owners. In addition, the Treasury worked with the legislators to identify an additional $14,996.50, which will be returned to area police departments, fire departments, and EMS organizations.

“I appreciate Treasurer Garrity’s strong commitment to returning property back to the people of Pennsylvania,” Rep. Hamm said. “This money belongs to them, and I was honored to partner with Treasurer Garrity, Sen. Yaw, and Rep. Flick to make sure our constituents receive the money that is owed to them.”

The average claim is worth about $1,600, and more than one in ten Pennsylvanians is owed unclaimed property. State law requires businesses to report unclaimed property to Treasury after three years of dormancy.
