UVM men's hoops back at practice
BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - It is early July, meaning the start of the college basketball season is still four months away, but for UVM, the road to March starts now. The Catamount men back in Burlington this week to begin offseason practice as they get ready for the campaign. As opposed to the past few years where Vermont had to completely reshape the rotation, four starters are back from last year’s team that won a third straight America East title and pushed Duke for about 30 minutes at the NCAA Tournament in Brooklyn. Head coach John Becker says he’s happy with the way his group is shaping up in the admittedly very early going. “It’s great to have the guys back on campus and everyone looks really good,” Becker said. “We’ve challenged them in the off season to work on certain things. Certain guys put on weight, certain guys take off weight. But guys have worked really hard at home, come back in shape and the new guys have been impressive the last couple years. We’re returning four starters. So I think for us as coaches in our preparation and planning for the year, we’re much more of a known entity as far as what we have. Obviously, everything has to be kind of earned again this year, but we know a lot more about our guys and what their strengths and weaknesses are. So as we plan how to tweak our system and evolve, we have a much better sense of what our guys can do.”
