LYNN — This week’s Lynn Woods Summer Cross Country races had a lower-than-usual turnout due to Fourth of July celebrations. That said, strong performances still poured in with great weather, to boot.

And of the 116 participants, some shined the brightest.

The 5-mile (2 loops) race was a close one between two Lynn runners, with 26-year-old Edgar Ortega (36:16) defeating 16-year-old Nicholas Fusco (36:24). Rounding out the top five were Saugus’ Chris Chapruet (36:27), Lynn’s Nakri Dao (37:29), and another Lynner in Ian Edwards (38:52).

Two more from Lynn finished in the top 10, and another two in the top 15.

Sal Genovese represented Marblehead with a time of 41:08, Drew Bennett led all of Peabody in 42:11, and Robert Vanlith’s 50:29 led Swampscott.

Martin Bures, of Medford, won the 2.3-mile, Hillside-to-Steel Tower race in 14:33. Rounding out the top 10 were Peabody’s Luke Murphy (14:48), Lynn’s Franklin Maldonado (14:54), Lynnfield’s Joel Beal (15:38), Saugus’ Steven Bennett (15:44), Manchester’s James Aloi (16:24), and four Lynners in Bryan Robles (16:45), Edwin Gomez (16:59), Ryan Ferguson (17:45), and Mark Flaherty (17:57).

In the kids’ race (1.59 miles), 9-year-olds Elle Ferguson (12:50), MacKenzie Beal (12:50), and Emily Conlon (13:41), all of Lynnfield, finished in the top five.

Speaking of Lynnfield, 5-year-old Parker Beal finished in 15:31 to secure a top-10 finish.

Next Wednesday’s session offers the Goat Path Course, “which covers much of what was the first formal race course in Lynn Woods, circa 1968,” according to organizer Joe Abelon.
