Floodwaters derail train, washout tracks
REGIONAL—A derailment and multiple train washouts in N’West Iowa gave emergency management teams yet another front to fight during this record-breaking flood season. Starting at 3:30 a.m. Friday, June 21, a BNSF Railway train carrying dry fertilizer derailed south of Alvord. Several of the nine cars overturned into a pool of accumulating rainwater. Although the accident affected the main railway, statements from BNSF and Lyon County emergency management explained that the incident was relatively mild, with no injuries or intense damage.
Steen, MN Man Gets 25-Year Prison Term For Sex Abuse, Appeals Conviction
Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Steen, Minnesota man found guilty in May in a sex abuse case in Lyon County has been sentenced. But he has appealed the verdict. According to criminal complaints filed with the Lyon County Clerk of Court’s Office by the county sheriff’s office, 22-year-old Ender Murray of Steen was accused of inappropriate sexual conduct with a 13-year-old victim and a 14-year-old victim. The complaints do not say if the victim was the same person both times. He was also accused of damaging a headstone at the Lester Cemetery.
