Train carrying fertilizer derails in northwestern Iowa
LYON COUNTY, Iowa (KCAU) — UPDATE: A BNSF train carrying fertilizer derailed near the small town of Alvord Friday morning. The derailment took place at Elmwood/K-30 just south of 220th Street, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office. The road is closed in the area. BNSF said the incident took place around 3:30 a.m. Friday morning.

ALVORD, Iowa (KIWA) - Northwest Iowa has seen a large amount of rainfall in the last 24 hours, causing flooding and several related issues throughout the area. According to KIWA, several roads have been closed, some Northwest Iowans have had to be evacuated from their homes and there has been a train derailment near the Lyon County town of Alvord. Lyon County Emergency Management Director Arden Kopishke told KIWA that a BNSF train was carrying dry fertilizer and some of the rail hopper cars could be seen overturned in the water.
