Stay cool and stay hydrated.
Iced waterPhoto byM Henderson The hot temperatures we are experiencing globally are having a negative effect not only on our well-being but on our ability to remain civil. When temperatures rise, so do tempers. The likelihood of attracting harmful bacteria and viruses also goes up.
Here are a few reminders for combating the problems that arise on a considerably warmer planet.
1. Stay indoors
Sunlight is important for vitamin D, but stay indoors as much as possible during hot, sweltering days. If you have to be outdoors, seek relief in the shade whenever you can. You might have to spend a little more money on air conditioning, but this is a time when it is well worth it. Use fans and sun-blocking curtains to keep the heat out.
2. Hydrate
It's important to drink plenty of water even when it's not hot outside. During elevated temperatures, elevate your fluid intake. Water is the best, but sports drinks and other liquids that contain electrolytes can also help with preventing dehydration. Stay away from sugary drinks and alcohol as these can further dehydrate you.
3. Slow down
Yes, you have a million things to accomplish, but take your time doing them. Slow down and take it easy, it will all get done.
4. Wear light, loose clothing
Natural fiber clothing that lets your skin breathe is the best option during hot weather. Wear a hat and loose clothing so that you don't become overheated. Stay away from constricting garments and things like tight jeans. Sandals and shoes made of natural materials keep your feet from getting too hot. If you must wear closed shoes, be sure to put on natural fabric socks that breathe and wick moisture.
5. Cook less
Heavy meals that require a lot of cooking are difficult to digest and preparing them heats up the house. Eat more raw vegetables, fruit, and salads during hot days to avoid feeling over-stuffed. High-water-content foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and grapes are not only delicious, they help you stay hydrated.
6. Take more cooling showers or baths
Cooling down in the shower after a long, hot day can ease both your body and your nerves. Try mint-scented gels and soaps for an extra mental uplift.
7. Relax in the pool
If you have a pool at your disposal, get into it and do so as often as possible. If you can add an umbrella or some sort of shade to the space, that will be all the better.
8. Go to the mall
Malls are not only places to shop, they are good places to eat meals, enjoy arcades, go to the spa, and socialize. The best thing about indoor malls is that they are air-conditioned.
9. Go to the movies
Two hours spent inside a movie theater usually means two hours out of the heat. See that movie you've wanted to see before it leaves the theater, or if you have time, see two of them.
10. Enjoy cooling desserts like snowballs and ice cream
Just about everyone loves snowballs and ice cream. This is your chance to try new flavors and maybe even have both a snow cone and an ice cream cone all in one day.
Stay cool!!
