Spaghetti and meatballs; that comfort food so popular that real-life chef, Ettore Boiardi, put it in a can and sold it to us with the name Chef Boyardee on the label. It might not be the most elegant entree on the menu, but it definitely is the most recognized.

Here are five restaurants in Baton Rouge that serve a good dish of spaghetti and meatballs.

    Anthony’s Italian Deli

    5575 Government

Home to what many people refer to as, "the best Italian sandwiches in the world", Anthony's Italian Deli should not be missed. This authentic Italian eatery has been around for over 30 years, and everything on the menu is delicious.

When it comes to the Spaghetti & Meatballs...Perfetti!! Two ample and tasty Italian-seasoned meatballs top a mound of al dente spaghetti swimming in their lovely homemade tomato sauce. The fact that there's no skimping on the sauce gives you the feeling that there's plenty of sauce to go around, so you must be at home. That's exactly what an order of spaghetti & meatballs at Anthony's feels, and tastes, like. Topped with grated Parmesan cheese, it comes with a small Italian salad and a piece of Italian bread.

Open Monday through Saturday 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.

    Veganish Vibes

    4608 Bennington Avenue

Even those who don't eat meat can still have spaghetti and meatballs. As the premier vegan restaurant in Baton Rouge, Veganish Vibes serves a 100% vegan menu that is delicious, nutritious, creative, and satisfying. You'll want to try a little of everything when you see the enticing menu.

The meatless meatballs at Veganish Vibes are a treat for vegans and non-vegans alike. Even carnivores can't tell that they contain no meat because they are quite delicious, and healthy. Served over gluten-free spaghetti in rich tomato sauce, the Meatballs and Spaghetti are on the daily special menu. It comes with two delicious sides like collard greens and candied yams plus a serving of their fried oyster mushrooms. Oh! The fried oyster mushrooms! They alone are a great reason to have a meal at Baton Rouge's only plant-based restaurant.

Open Monday through Friday 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Saturday.

    Di Giulio Brothers Italian Cafe

    2903 Perkins Road

My first romantic meal in Baton Rouge happened at Di Giulio Bros. Italian Cafe, and it is still one of my favorite restaurants. This authentic neighborhood staple has been around since 1987.

Where other restaurants serve spaghetti and meatballs, Di Giulio's menu offers Spaghetti with Meatball (singular), and boy, what a meatball. It's huge! And delicious! Smothered in their made-fresh-daily homemade tomato sauce, this makes for a satisfying meal. It comes with a side of bread and House or Caesar Salad. Gorgonzola & Walnut Salad or Caprese Salad are available for a minimal additional charge.

    Digiulio's is open:

    • 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM for lunch, Monday through Friday
    • 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Monday through Wednesday
    • 5:00 PM to 10 PM, Thursday
    • 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM Friday and Saturday
    • 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM Sunday

    Brunch is served on Sundays.

    Gino's Restaurant

    4542 Bennington Avenue

For a hefty dose of old-world charm, head to Gino's Restaurant for a plate of their Spaghetti and Meatballs. Family-owned and operated for over 50 years, everything at Gino's is prepared fresh in-house and served with elegance.

Made from a traditional Southern Italian recipe, the spaghetti and meatballs are coated in their signature tomato sauce. It comes with a side of Gino's delicious Italian Salad. For a special treat, get an order of the Laurence Bread to sop up the sauce.

Hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM, Friday and Saturday.

    Monjuni's Italian Cafe & Grocery

    711 Jefferson Highway

The Original tomato sauce at Monjuni's Italian Cafe & Grocery is so good that it is bottled and sold separately. It honestly takes their Spaghetti and Meatballs to a whole new level. You can order the spaghetti with one meatball, two meatballs, Italian sausage, meat sauce, or just the house sauce, and it comes with a House or Caesar Salad. Gluten-free spaghetti is available.

    Hours are:

    • 11:00 AM to 8:30 PM, Monday through Thursday
    • 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Friday
    • 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Saturday

    Monjuni's is closed on Sunday.

Spaghetti and meatballs sauce is not supposed to be sweet. Yes, the sugar is there to help with indigestion. I prefer regular seasoning with an extra touch of pepper.
