(Updated) Eggnog is one of those holiday traditions that never dies. That's a good thing, because it's so delicious. With this easy recipe, you don't have to limit yourself to what you find on grocery store shelves. You can have eggnog at home any time you want it.

    Ingredients

    • 1 dozen large eggs, separated into yolks and whites
    • 2 cups + 2 tablespoons sugar, divided
    • 2 quarts heavy whipping cream
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla flavoring
    • 1 teaspoon nutmeg

    Directions

    1. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, beat egg yolks with 1 1/2 cups sugar until the mixture is lemon colored.
    2. In a second medium-sized mixing bowl, beat egg whites and 1/2 cup sugar until the mixture is nearly stiff.
    3. In a large bowl, add the vanilla flavoring and 2 tablespoons of sugar to the cream.
    4. Whip the cream.
    5. Gradually fold the beaten egg mixtures into the whipped cream. Mix gently.
    6. Sprinkle or grate nutmeg on top.

    Delicious when refrigerated overnight.

    Notes

    1. This recipe includes raw eggs. It can be gently simmered for a similar drink with a slightly different consistency, if consuming raw eggs is a concern.
    2. This recipe makes a lot of eggnog. It is perfect for a party, but is easily halved to serve a smaller number of people.
    3. If you want to add alcohol to this recipe, add up to one cup of bourbon, Kentucky whiskey, rye, etc. to the beaten egg yolk and sugar custard, and up to one cup of alcohol to the egg white meringue. Blend gently before mixing it all up with the whipped cream.
    4. Cinnamon can also be sprinkled on top, if desired.
