'America's Oldest Grocery Store' Celebrates Major Anniversary In Michigan

Establishments come and go decades pass, but one Michigan grocery store continues to stand the tests of time.

According to MLive , Mackinac Island's very own Doud’s Market just celebrated its 140th anniversary, serving its first customer in 1884! The beloved grocery store is widely-recognized at America's oldest, and, as with many historic locations, has quite a storied past.

Doud's Market started as "Doud bros" and was originally located along the water (where the current Mackinac Island Ferry Company now stands). Brothers and founders James and Patrick Doud reopened the store in Marquette Park in 1938 after it was destroyed in a fire and gave it a new name to go with the new century.

Doud's Mercantile operated for 70 years, keeping up with the times until it couldn't anymore. It underwent major renovations between 2006 and 2007, and again, received a new name.

Doud's Market is currently, and always has been, the only grocery store on Mackinac Island. So, as one can imagine, it has to have a lot of products to keep locals and tourists happy and fed! MLive praised Doud's for its fresh produce, noodles, and grab-and-go meals for boaters among an extensive, ever-evolving inventory list.

Despite being around for well over a century, Doud's does their best to stay modern and even takes online orders as part of their latest delivery service option!

Fourth-generation owner Andrew Doud took over the market in 2008 and is already looking forward to the store's next big milestone.

“This is an incredible anniversary. But we are more excited for the 150th."
