    Bill Shepler, longtime leader of popular ferry service, dies at 92

    GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Bill Shepler, the longtime leader of the popular Mackinac Island ferry service, has died. He was 92 years old.

    The company posted the news to social media on Thursday evening.

    “Bill’s dedication and passion for connecting people to the beauty of Mackinac Island created unforgettable memories for countless guests,” the post read . “His legacy of service, leadership and community spirit will forever be a part of our lives.”

    Shepler’s father, Capt. William H. Shepler, launched the ferry service in the 1940s, with Bill Jr. serving as one of the pilots. Bill took over the family business after his parents’ deaths, and his kids took over in 2014.

    According to News 8 affiliate Crain’s Grand Rapids Business, the Shepler family sold the company in 2022.

    The social media post concluded with: “Rest in peace, Captain Bill. You will be deeply missed.”
