Mason quarterback Cason Carswell commits to Western Illinois

MASON, Mich. (WLNS) – High school football teams across Michigan are just over a month away from officially having practices for the upcoming seasons.

One of the top returning players in the area is Mason senior quarterback Cason Carswell, who announced his commitment to Western Illinois on Monday.

Carswell has played a big part in the Bulldogs winning three straight regional championships, including the program’s first-ever regional title in 2021, and making the state championship game in 2023 for the first time in program history.

While he wasn’t the starting quarterback in 2021, Carswell put his name on the map in the regional championship win over Brother Rice. He entered the game after injuries to other quarterbacks on the roster and eventually threw the game-winning touchdown with less than a minute remaining.

“The Brother Rice game was the start to my high school career,” Carswell said. “That was my first real game on varsity where I got real playing time. That was a big turning point for me.”

As he gets ready to enter his senior season, Carswell already owns the school record for career passing yards, passing yards in a single-game career, passing touchdowns, and most passing touchdowns in a game.

So as Carswell looks to add to his legacy at Mason, he’s feeling confident in his commitment to Western Illinois.

“They were the first team that offered me, so that was a big thing in my mind,” Carswell said. “They believed in me first and the school was great. The coaching staff was great I loved the culture they’re bringing. New head coach. I think it’s going to be a great opportunity for me.”
