On July 5, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office announced that police dog Archer had died due to a “heat episode” after helping track a suspect during a heatwave. The K-9 officer was in critical condition after being admitted to an animal hospital. Unfortunately, after struggling for his life for an entire day, the German Shepherd passed away.

Police dog ‘Archer’ dies after helping track suspect in 90-degree weather

On Thursday, July 4, Archer was assisting officers to track a suspect who had escaped into the wooded areas. However, with Florida temperatures being as high as 90 degrees that afternoon, the police dog suffered from a “heat episode” and died due to the heatwave, per USA Today . The K-9 officer was urgently admitted to a clinic.

After his condition had stabilized, he was transferred to the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital in Gainesville. Archer received plasma transfusions, and his condition was noted to have stabilized. Moreover, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office provided regular updates on his condition on its Facebook account .

Unfortunately, the department announced on Friday that the K-9 was no more. Archer was with his handler, fellow K-9 officers, and the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital’s staff members when he passed away. The department also noted that the police dog “honorably fulfilled his duty by protecting our citizens, our communities, and our deputies without fear or hesitation.”

Archer’s death was caused by overheating, which can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke . Extreme temperatures can lead to several complications. It can also prove fatal if left unaddressed. However, keeping dogs in shaded areas and air-conditioned spaces will help during soaring temperatures.

Most importantly, pet parents should take their furry companions to the vet if they notice symptoms of heat stroke . Moreover, they shouldn’t wait until the dogs look like they are suffering from the high temperatures. It is crucial to take precautions to keep them cool throughout the day so the situation doesn’t take an ugly turn.
