Comer man faces animal cruelty charges. Says he's innocent of selling sick donkeys
A Comer man is facing animal cruelty charges in the wake of an investigation by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Sheriff’s deputies on June 13 arrested Hershel Clint Canady Jr., 27, on 11 counts of cruelty to animals and one felony charge of theft by deception.
Comer Lions Club donates to library
Comer Lions Club recently donated $150 to the Madison County Library to purchase supplies for their “Bookish Bundles” program. The program is available for teens ages 12 -18. Inside the bundles are bookmarks, keychains and other items related to books. Last year, the Comer Lions Club donated funds for the STEM program. STEM activities include snap circuits, KEVA planks, games and more. For more information on these programs, contact the Madison County Library at 706-795-5597.
ROTARY BUILDS RAMP
On Saturday, June 15, the Rotary Clubs of Madison and Banks counties came together to construct handicap ramp # 946 for Barbara Watkins on Scales Creek Road in Homer. Barbara has cancer and other health issues and will need surgery soon. Her husband, Harold Watkins, passed away in May and was a truck driver and long hauler. Their son, Jeffery, lives with Barbara and she has close loving family members that help with their needs. Jeffery joined the Rotarians and volunteers that came together to provide the labor to construct the 27 foot ramp for the Watkins family. Mullis graduates from FGCU
Macy Mullis, a 2021 graduate of Madison County High School, earned her bachelor of science degree in biology from Florida Gulf Coast University (Fort Myers, FL) on May 5, 2024, with summa cum laude honors. Mullis will continue her education by pursuing her masters degree in health science beginning this fall at FGCU. While Mullis has retired her swim cap and goggles, she will move into a grad assistant role this fall and work with the FGCU swim and dive team in operations.
Two women arrested at traffic stop
Two Hull women face numerous charges following a traffic stop. On Wednesday, June 12, a Madison County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed a vehicle with no tag lights illuminating traveling south on Hwy. 106 South near Stone Stewart Road and the driver crossed the center line completely with the entire driver’s side of the vehicle.

Ribbon cut for Georgia Grown Trail 98
The ribbon was cut for Georgia Grown Trail 98 at Spencer Park in Commerce on June 11. Trail 98, the first agritourism trail in Northeast Georgia, stretches across Madison, Jackson and Banks counties. House Resolution 937, co-sponsored by Rep. Rob Leverett and Rep. Alan Powell, was passed by the Georgia Assembly this year to officially designate a portion of Hwy. 98 that runs from Sunset Avenue to Hwy. 164 as a scenic highway for agritourism.
