Summer concert held at Casa Porto
Heather Ainsley ECB Publishing, Inc On June 25, members of the Monticello community gathered on the grounds of the elegant Casa Porto to enjoy a celebratory evening of musical performance. The venue, formerly known as the Girardeau Villa Porto, is located just east of the courthouse, at 950 E. Washington St., and has enjoyed performances for the last several years as a means of promoting classical music artists and raising money to support their nonprofit. Foundacion Tocando Puertas Para Abrir Futuros, which translates to the “Knocking on Doors to Open Futures Foundation,” was founded 16 years ago by the owners of the Casa Porto, Evelia Porto and her husband of 22 years, Richard Hos.

Leon County Sheriff investigates west Tallahassee shooting, second in 24-hour period
A man was injured in a Wednesday night shooting in west Tallahassee — the second shooting within 24 hours. The Leon County Sheriff's Office arrived around 9:45 p.m. to investigate a call in the area of Blountstown and Parklawn Streets where deputies found a man suffering from gunshot wounds, according to a LCSO news release.
Single Family Construction Permits Plummet in June, Down 52.9%
According to filings with Leon County and the City of Tallahassee, the number of single-family new construction permits was down 52.9% in June 2024 when compared to June 2023. There were 32 permits issued in June 2024, down up from the 68 issued one year ago. There were 66 permits issued in May 2024.
Construction underway on Georgia's largest Buc-ee's, opening slated for summer 2025
The wait won't be much longer on Georgia getting a new Buc-ee's. Construction has started on the Brunswick location on Georgia 99 at the I-95 exit. It's being built by J. Raymond Construction out of Florida. Media coordinator Crissy Gonzales said via email that the Buc-ee's has a tentative opening date of June 2, 2025. However, that date is subject to change.

Newberry works on strategic plan for downtown
The city of Newberry hosted a strategic visioning session for the town’s downtown area on Wednesday, gathering input from stakeholders to help form an action plan. Jennifer Gregory, president of consulting organization International Downtown Association’s Downtown Strategies division, led the event, as her team is putting together the plan. An action plan, unlike a comprehensive or strategic plan, is a short-term vision for the next five years and will come with 20-30 suggested projects to help revitalize Newberry’s downtown.
