UWG alumna, leader appointed to Georgia Council for the Arts
An alumna and leader at the University of West Georgia has been appointed to the Georgia Council for the Arts, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announced earlier this week. Brandy Barker ’08, currently serving as UWG’s chief creative officer and assistant vice president for University Advancement, is a practiced arts leader with dynamic career spanning both academia and the creative industry. With this appointment, she will support the cultivation and growth of vibrant, thriving Georgia communities through the arts.

Thousands Attend Snapping Shoals EMC Annual Meeting
More than 3,000 people, including about 1,500 members, gathered Thursday for the Snapping Shoals Electric Membership Corp. annual meeting at the Georgia International Horse Park. In addition to the traditional blue grass sounds of The Purple Hulls, attendees received health information from Piedmont Newton Hospital, energy tips from SSEMC employees and a visit from 811’s Digger the Dog. Keith Williams of Covington was the lucky winner of the 2003 Ford Ranger that was retired from SSEMC’s fleet. Rufus and Margaret Johnson of Covington were recognized as the Oldest Married Couple present and will receive a $100 credit on their power bill. Carolyn Greeson of Covington was recognized as the Oldest Member in attendance and will receive a $50 credit. Lance Harper (District 1), G. Anthony Norton (District 2), Walter Johnson (District 3) and Gene Morris (District 4) were each re-elected to serve three-year terms for their districts on the SSEMC board of directors. Jeff Wigington was elected to fill the unexpired term of District 2 director Dr. Millard Ross, who died last July. Snapping Shoals EMC is a member-owned electric cooperative providing electric service to approximately 100,000 homes and businesses in an eight-county area that includes large portions of Newton, Rockdale and Henry counties, as well as part of DeKalb, Butts, Walton, Jasper and Morgan counties.

With the conclusion of SEC Media Days, the media’s official All-SEC preseason teams were released on Friday morning. Among the selections on the offensive side of the football are eight Georgia Bulldogs players, up from seven a year ago. Three Bulldogs were selected to the first team, including at the quarterback position, where Carson Beck was given the nod over Texas‘ Quinn Ewers and Alabama’s Jalen Milroe. School of Art Galleries Director Katie Geha named director of UW–Madison’s Tandem Press
July 22, 2024 — Katie Geha, director and chief curator of the galleries at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, has accepted the position of director at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Tandem Press, a premier publisher of fine art prints affiliated with the university’s art department in their School of Education. Founded in 1987, Tandem Press has commissioned original fine art editions by a diverse roster of accomplished artists, including Derrick Adams, Richard Bosman, Lynda Benglis, Suzanne Caporael, Robert Cottingham, and Sam Gilliam.
