The Madison Township trustees are going to have to take a step back on a project to make some roadway related improvements in the southern part of the town.

The board held a special meeting Monday night to open bids on a culvert replacement and paving project on Sites Road but didn't receive any bids before the 7:30 p.m. submission deadline.

Trustees voted earlier this month to advertise for bids to replace storm sewers at two locations and repair and resurface about one-third mile of Sites Road north of Chew Road and also to resurface a similar portion of Marianna Drive north of Chew. The project covers Sites Road from Chew Road north 0.35 miles to the dead end. The work on Marianna Drive runs from Chew north 0.34 miles to the dead end and includes milling the road surface, making necessary repairs and resurfacing.

Trustees briefly discussed whether to extend the bid deadline or revise the plans to encourage more interest.

“That’s Adam’s (Richland County Engineer Adam Gove) call,” said trustee Dan Fletcher. “I would say whatever he says to do we could do — whether to extend the bid or rebid, extend the bid with an addendum to some of the things that might have caused people not to bid it.”

The board then unanimously approved a motion by Fletcher to contact the county engineer and move forward based on his advice. Trustees did not say if they are going to revisit the project at another special meeting or wait until their next regular meeting Aug. 5 to take action.

The estimated cost for the Sites Road project is $221,600. Half of the cost will be covered by an Ohio Public Works Commission grant and the rest with a 20-year OPWC loan.
