MADISON, Wis. — Beloit Turner wrestling head coach Matt Ries has often touted that the female wrestlers on his squad are pioneers for what has become a booming sport.

Junior Sydney Andrews can now safely say she has set the standard for girls wrestling at Turner High School after she finished an outstanding weekend at the Kohl Center in the WIAA Girls State Wrestling Championships with a second-place finish.

Andrews, the first Trojan girl to place at state, had two pins and a decision win on her way to the first-place match. She pinfalled Barron junior Micahlee Skjerly (22-8) in 2:47 to open her weekend on Thursday before pinning Waupaca freshman Caylin Johnson in 2:39 to advance to the semifinals.

The 145-pounder then won a hard-fought battle with Eau Claire senior Shelly Bullman (42-6) with an 11-7 decision victory to secure a place in the championship.

But Pulaski freshman Harlow Skenandore (28-1) came out on top of a tight clash with Andrews (32-3) by keeping the junior wrestler at bay long enough to secure a 5-1 win.

Andrews’ teammate, Mady Lucero (29-9), was pinned in 50 seconds by La Crosse Logan/Central’s Amelia Adams (29-4) on Thursday.

Turner’s Zack Ries, competing in the WIAA Division 2 Boys State tournament for the second-straight season, had advanced out of Thursday with a 7-0 decision win over Delavan-Darien’s Jacob Huff (35-10) but he was knocked out of the 144-pound bracket after losing a 9-2 decision to Luxemburg-Casco senior Isaac Jerabek in the quarterfinals and falling in the first round of the consolation round as Baldwin-Woodville’s Graiden Monicken (31-9) won via a 15-2 major decision.

Turner junior Brody Berg lost a tech fall to Brodhead/Juda senior Joe Lohmar on Thursday.

Lohmar and senior Marcus McIntyre both placed. McIntyre earned a fifth-place finish and Lohmar ended up sixth.

McIntyre (42-4) had advanced to the 138-pound semifinals after pinning Belleville/Monticello/New Glarus senior Mason Mau (43-7) in 4:36 but was knocked into a wrestleback after Oconto Falls junior Cole Bozile (23-4) won a 12-2 major decision. McIntyre (42-4) then lost an 11-5 decision to Kewaskum’s Bryston Scoles (46-3) but won via DQ over Mau in the fifth-place match.

Lohmar (40-8) won his 150-pound quarterfinals’ match by pinning Kewaskum’s Kage Weseman (21-8) in just 35 seconds but fell in the semifinals after Evansville junior Danny Heiser (50-1) won a 15-0 technical fall in 4:36. Wrightstown’s Jacob Durocher (44-11) won a close 1-0 decision over Lohmar before Hudzon Sebesta-Opelt (38-4) of Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal won the fifth-place match with a 4:23 pin.

In Division 3, Parkview/Albany’s Wesley Egan placed fifth and Sam Schwengels finished sixth.

Egan (52-6), a 215-pound junior, suffered a 50-second pinfall by Blair-Taylor’s Jackson Shramek (42-3) in the quarterfinal but bounced back with a 2:48 pin over Boyceville’s Zach Hellendrung (25-7). He then lost his second match of the weekend to Iowa-Grant/Highland’s Bode Brokopp (35-12) in a 7-2 decision but locked up fifth-place with a 7-4 victory over Cadott’s Axel Tegels (39-10).

Schwengels, a 190-pound senior, fell 7-0 to Waterloo’s Trevor Firari (37-6) in the quarterfinals before winning the first round of the consolation round with a 6-1 decision over Kewaunee’s Kemper Robinson (36-15). He suffered an injury in his consolation semifinal against Fennimore’s Wyatt Ahnen (38-7) that forced him to default that match and medically forfeit his final one.
