MADISON, Wis. -- Public Health Madison & Dane County on Thursday issued an Overdose Spike Alert, after at least 10 people were treated for suspected opioid overdose in the county over the last 48 hours.

PHMDC officials said seven other people were treated for unusual symptoms after consuming crack cocaine. Public Health Supervisor Julia Olsen said PHMDC is also tracking an uptick in incidents in Milwaukee and Chicago connected to the use of Medetomidine, an animal tranquilizer.

"We often see drug traffic patterns in larger neighboring cities eventually affect Madison, so this is something we want our communities to know about," Olsen said.

Some common signs of an overdose to look out for include pale, sweaty or clammy skin; lips and/or fingertips turning blue, slow or irregular breathing or difficulty or inability to wake.

If you think someone is overdosing, call 911.

PHMDC has safer use supplies, including fentanyl test strips and Narcan, available at its office at 2705 East Washington Ave. or 2300 South Park Street in Madison
