MADISON, Wis. -- The Department of Natural Resources announced Friday it is accepting applications for the 2024 "Learn to Hunt Deer" program at Sandhill Wildlife Area.

The DNR said its workshops combine classroom instruction and hands-on field experience, and culminate in a mentored hunt on intensively managed wildlife habitat. The program will provide participants with an exciting educational experience and help the DNR reach its deer management objectives.

The DNR said all participants must attend one of three workshops, which are held Aug. 21, 23, and 24. Each of the workshops will cover deer biology and management, hunting rules and regulations, ethical hunter behavior, basic firearm safety, and practice sighting and firing a hunting rifle.

After completing the workshops, the DNR said participants will embark on a two-day hunt on Nov. 2 and 3 at the Sandhill Wildlife Area. All participants must complete a hunter education course before the hunt.

The DNR said the program is open to both young hunters, age 12-15, and those age 16+ without previous experience hunting deer with a firearm. A chaperone must accompany all hunters. Applications will be accepted through July 1.
